The Alchemist has been on my ‘To Read’ list for God knows how long. Somehow, I never got to read it until sometime last week. I had been looking forward to devouring it that I got so excited when I finally got it on my tab. The Alchemist, written by Paulo Coelho was first published way back in 1988. It’s a well known book which has been translated into 60 different languages.
It tells a tale of a young boy simply known as ‘The boy’ (throughout the book) as he goes in search of his treasure. He meets a variety of people; a king, a gypsy, an Arab girl (who he falls in love with), an Englishman and finally, an alchemist who taught me a thing or two that helped in his search. The main point this book tries to drive home is to always follow your dreams.
Aside from the fact that it was an easy read, I really did not get what all the hype was about. I mean, I had heard a lot about this book and I was really expecting a ‘wow’ experience, but alas, what I felt was less than ‘wow’. maybe I’m not normal or I’m not seeing the inner meaning in the book, I really don’t know. All I know is that I did not really feel this book, probably that’s why this review is short!
If you’ve read this book, kindly let me know what you all think. I want to believe I’m not the only one who feels this way.
~”People are afraid to pursue their most important dreams, because they feel that they don’t deserve them, or that they’ll be unable to achieve them”-Paulo Coelho, The Alchemist~

I honestly read it twice. I really loved this novel. It is still on the New York times best selling list. The idea of following dreams and facing doubt have been portrayed before, but the way Paulo did it was unique. The way the boy Santiago transforms from just a sheep boy to something else, mixed with magical philosophies and a great message. I could give many examples of the many parts I loved in this book, but that will make my long comment even longer.
I think maybe the wow factor was diminished by the hype the book have received. Perhaps if you have never heard of the title and it lands on your reading list, you might have felt differently.

Yes, you are right. Probably if the hype wasn’t there, I might have loved it better. I’m glad you actually liked it. 🙂

Well if that’s the case, how about this; I am a dentist – by day – but at the darkest hours in the serenity of my mind, I am a story teller. So what do you say if I asked you to consider reviewing my novella, Kima, set to be released this December. The story is a 126 pages of inspirational fantasy that I would like to share with the world.
Now that’s a book you’ve never heard of. So far two beta readers gave three stars on Good read… one of two readers gave the Da Vinci code a three stars too… but they both agree it is a nice story with message.
you can provide an email if you are interested, but If you don’t think my novella to be your cup of tea, then I leave you with a book recommendation… War and Peace by Leo Tolstoy. Classic, but… you know what… I won’t raise your expectations 🙂

Author, dentist, pianist, painter… the sole survivor of Hiroshima, the true architecture of the Trojan horse, and the academic adviser for Harry Potter… and that’s just Monday. 😀
But honestly, it should not be easy, but when you have passion for doing what you do, then, like Paulo says, the universe conspire in your favor 🙂
